LAW BITES: Employees are now entitled to Paternity Leave
A new amendment to the Basic Conditions of Employment Act late last year has provided men with a paternity leave entitlement of 10 days. The leave can be taken at the time that a child is born or adopted.
The leave entitlement is unpaid but the employee is in a position to apply to the Unemployment Insurance Fund for paternal leave compensation which will amount to a percentage of the employee’s usual remuneration.
Employers are advised to amend their leave policies and practices to make provision for this new leave entitlement.
